Adding Value to Milk


With annual exports in excess of NZ$13.7 billion, the dairy industry is New Zealand’s biggest export earner, accounting for more than 29% by value of the country’s merchandise exports. Around 95% of New Zealand’s milk is exported. Here is some detail about who those processors are.

Fonterra Brands (NZ) Ltd

Fonterra Brands (NZ) Ltd is a fast-moving consumer goods company wholly owned by Fonterra. It holds leadership positions in all major categories - milk, cultured foods, cheese and butter. Key brands are Anchor, Fresh 'n Fruity, Calci Yum, Mainland and Galaxy. FBNZ employs approximately 1,700 people, with major operations based at Takanini in South Auckland.

Tatua Co-operative Dairy Company Ltd

Tatua is an autonomous, independent dairy company owned entirely by about 120 farmer shareholders. 
The Company was established in 1914 and is the only dairy co-operative remaining in New Zealand that has never been part of any amalgamation. This has resulted in a distinctive culture of independence and a strong sense of identity. 
Tatua's factory is located at Tatuanui in the Waikato region of the North Island.

Westland Milk Products

Westland Milk Products is an independent, co-operative dairy company on the West Coast of the South Island, owned by its 370 farmer shareholders. It has a history of more than 60 years of dairy production. Each year the company processes more than 350 million litres of milk, with daily milk intake reaching 2 million litres at the peak of the season.

Goodman Fielder Ltd

Goodman Fielder is Australasia's leading listed food company.

The company owns a host of iconic brands that generations of New Zealanders have grown up with and put in their supermarket trolleys every week. Milk, cheese, bread, bacon, flour, oils, pizzas, and frozen meals are part of the range of products on offer.

Goodman Fielder - Dairy is one of the primary suppliers of dairy products and small goods in New Zealand. Its brands include Meadow Fresh milk and yogurts, Anchor cheese, Tararua butter and dips and Puhoi specialty cheeses.

Open Country Dairy Ltd

Open Country Dairy was formed in 2001 as a private owned company operating in New Zealand as a dairy ingredients manufacturer. The company is supplied by 550 independent dairy farmers and processes around 900 million litres of quality milk per annum in its three manufacturing sites. The factories are located in Waharoa, Wanganui and Awarua.

Synlait Ltd

Synlait is an innovative dairy processing company based in the heart of Canterbury, New Zealand. It combines expert farming, with state-of-the-art processing, to produce a range of nutritional milk products that provide genuine benefits for health and wellbeing. Miraka Ltd

Miraka Limited, a new entrant to the New Zealand dairy processing industry is backed by a group of Maori trusts and incorporations. These organisations include Wairarapa Moana, Tuaropaki Trust, Waipapa 9 Trust, Hauhangaroa Partnership, Tauhara Moana Trust and Huiarau Farms. Its strategic partners and investors include the Maori Trustee, Te Awahohonu Forest Trust Limited, Vinamilk, a leading enterprise in Vietnam in manufacturing milk and dairy products and Global Dairy Network who bring experience and knowledge in dairy sales and marketing across the world.

Dairy Goat Co-operative

Dairy Goat Co-operative is an independent co-operative of 60 dairy goat farmers. The co-operative was formed in 1985 and has pioneered and led the world in the development and manufacture of goat milk based nutritional powders for infants and children. Dairy Goat Co-operative is located in Hamilton, where its single site contains offices and three manufacturing plants - spray drying, dry blending and canning.




Gardians is a privately owned dairy processing plant, located in the South Otago region of NZ. The plant uses the latest technology to produce a range of complex nutritional dairy powders focussing on a range of health and life cycle categories.
